The Center for Educational Resources partners with faculty and graduate students to extend their instructional and scholarly impact by connecting and innovative pedagogy and digital technologies. In support of this mission, the Pedagogy Specialist advises and assists faculty and graduate students in the effective identification and use of innovative teaching strategies and, where appropriate, instructional technologies. The Pedagogy Specialist develops and coordinates the TA Training Program, working closely with representatives of the Schools of Arts & Science and Engineering to develop courses or short courses on post-secondary teacher training. The Pedagogy Specialist manages instruction-related project teams (and participates as a contributing member of other teams) that develop new curriculum and/or educational technology resources. As a senior staff member, the Pedagogy Specialist serves on both academic and instructional technical committees and helps expand the institution's knowledge base for education practice, education research, and instructional technology enhancement objectives. This encompasses conceptualizing and conducting pedagogical research (including assessment, evaluation, and impact strategies) and writing articles and presenting papers at professional conferences.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:

1. Provides project management on pedagogically related initiatives including TA and faculty training, and leadership on academic integrity initiatives. Responsibilities include directing project teams (faculty, programmers, web developers, graphic designers and illustrators, student assistants, external partners); monitoring and reporting project progress and evaluation; conducting needs assessments; providing critical evaluation of digital program concepts; initiating and writing pedagogical sections of proposals to foundations, government agencies, or private donors; developing web and electronic instructional resources; developing formative and summative evaluation plans; advising faculty on the effective use of conventional and digital resources for specific projects; communicating training opportunities and new resources to TAs and faculty.

2. Designs, develops and delivers seminars on instructional techniques and educational technologies of interest to faculty and graduate teaching assistants. Examples of relevant topics may include strategies for: developing a course syllabus; implementing effective lecture delivery techniques; identifying and adopting active learning strategies; obtaining student feedback during and outside of class; creating student assignments (individual and collaborative); encouraging classroom discussion; using digital video and audio to enhance instruction; facilitating online discussion and collaboration; taking effective advantage of electronic library resources and library staff expertise.

3. Conducts consultations on effective teaching strategies including use of digital resources. Consultations may include: one-on-one meetings on teaching strategies and/or use of educational technologies; opportunities for classroom observation with confidential feedback; opportunities for videotaping sample classes; project consultations for teams led by other CER staff.

4. Researches, identifies, evaluates, and recommends innovative pedagogical strategies and new educational technology resources.  Activities include: attending professional conferences, researching professional literature and reporting on its relevance to Hopkins; representing the CER on University-wide committees and in public forums; advocating innovative pedagogical techniques and uses of technologies as instructional tools to faculty and TAs.

Qualifications:

Requires graduate degree (PhD or EdD preferred) and 3-5 years related experience; demonstrated excellence in teaching skills; excellent project management skills, ability to set and fulfill priorities and work independently; strong time management and task follow through capabilities; demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate teams of high level professionals (including faculty and other technical specialists) from multiple departments and University divisions in conceptualization, development, and execution of funded projects; thorough knowledge of current pedagogical research and practices and of current and emerging instructional technologies; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to work in a team environment. In addition, the individual who fills this position must be a self starter who sets goals for herself/himself and members of the teams s/he may lead, develops strategies for meeting them, and achieves them with minimal oversight. SALARY: Competitive, within Johns Hopkins Grade 92 range.
