This position assumes primary responsibility for visitor services, tour management, telephone reception and messaging, house security, collections monitoring, and shop sales. Responsible for overall quality and safety of visitor experience. Open and close house, Monday or Tuesday thru Friday. Set alarm, open/close shutters and prepare house for tours. Notify curator of any problems with house or collections. Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of alarm system. Greet arriving tours (scheduled and walk-in), general orientation and ticket sales. Serve as point of contact for group tour bookings, maintain contact from initial inquiry to final confirmation, generate related correspondence such as tour contracts, directions, and coordinate with Evergreen House for joint tours. Serve as tour manager for scheduled tours including guide assignments and tour logistics; be able to give the tour introduction. Coordinate guide scheduling for daily coverage, special tours and events. Maintain master guides’ schedule, produce monthly calendar for guides’ mailing, update to reflect changes, and arrange for substitutes as necessary. Incoming telephone reception and messaging, special events registration. Establish a cash box and registration sheet for special events; work with Membership/Database and PR and Marketing staff to capture relevant visitor information. Maintain accurate attendance figures for periodic reports to the Advisory Council and for grant applications. Ability to conduct tours of the house as well as alternate tour for the disabled. Point of contact with JHU Facilities Department for routine maintenance, i.e.: plumbing, foundation lighting, and snow removal. Responsible for the management of life safety and visitor comfort, including medical emergency. Museum shop sales; learn features and operation of cash register; provide some assistance to museum shop coordinator. Manage countertop appearance and shop literature. Assist in all activities of the museum including promotion of events, membership, and scheduled tours. Set up and take-down for concerts, lectures, openings and other special programs. Participate in mailings, assist PR and Marketing to increase visitation. Coordinate and assign tasks to student employees and volunteers to help meet the goals of this position. Qualifications: High School diploma. Ability to stand for long periods of time, lift and move 30 lbs. on a regular basis. The ideal candidate will be outgoing, friendly, and gracious and will have a professional appearance, polite manner and articulate communication.Preferred Qualifications: Additional education preferred; museum or customer service experience desired.
