Eisenhower Library The Johns Hopkins University Phillips (Henry, Jr.) 1838-1895 Papers (1862-1892) Ms. 45 Biographical Note Henry Phillips, Jr. was an author, philologist, and numismatist. He was born in Philadelphia in 1838 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1859. Although he was admitted to the Philadelphia Bar in 1859, Phillips devoted most of his life to researches and writings in the fields of philology, numismatics, and folklore. His contributions to the field of Numismatics were "History of American Colonial Paper Currency" (1865) and "History of American Continental Paper Money" (1866). He was most closely identified with the American Philosophical Society where he served at various times as curator, secretary, and librarian. Henry Phillips, Jr. died in 1895. Scope and Content Note The collection consists largely of the manuscript writings of the author, Henry Phillips, Jr. Included are papers delivered before the American Philosophical Association, translations of French, German, and Italian poetry, original one-act plays, notes regarding the development of a universal language, Esperanto, and research and articles on numismatics. Some business correspondence and clippings complete the collection. Two letters (regarding?) were transferred from "Some Accounts of the Bills of Credit or Paper Money of Rhode Island," by Elisha Porter (F76.R52 n.8). The Accession Number is 93-94.37. These items were added to the collection, July 2001.
