Engineering Databases and Indexes

Databases and indexes help you find journal articles.  Databases are the electronic versions of indexes.

Databases

Below is a list of some of the major databases that can help engineering researches find information.

HERMES

HERMES is the Hopkins Electronic Resource Management System.  It allows you to search for electronic resources owned by JHU by keyword or title. It covers both databases and some electronic journal collections.  It is not a complete list of all electronic material owned by JHU, but more is being added all the time.

AccessScience

Access Science is a good basic encyclopedia of science and technology.  It is a good place to look for overviews and basic information about a topic.

It is also a good place for non-sci/tech students to get started on a science or technical research paper.

JHU

Annual Reviews

Annual Reviews provide analytic reviews in 30 focused disciplines within the Biomedical, Physical, and Social Sciences disciplines.  Full text of back to the 1930s is available.

Great places to find big overviews of a topic.  You can bbrowse each volume or search across all the volumes and all issues.

JHU

Applied Science and Technology Abstracts

Applied Science and Technology is a great place for basic research for undergraduates.  Covers the big sci/tech journals and some society publications like Science, Nature, PNAS, ASME, ASCE.

Limited full text, but a good place for non-science students to find sci/tech information.

JHU

Info About

Compendex

Compendex covers over 5,100 engineering specific journals, trade magazines, technical reports, conference proceedings (ASME, ASCE, SPIE, OSA, etc), standards, and more.  It goes back to 1884.  It has links to full text where available.

JHU

Info About

GEOBASE

GeoBase covers earth sciences, ecology, geomechanics, human geography and oceanography.  Covers approximately 3,000 journals.

JHU

Info About

General Science Full Text

Like Applied Science and Technology, this database covers the big sci/tech journals and some society publications like Science, Nature, PNAS, ASME, ASCE.  A good place for non-science students to find sci/tech information.

JHU

Info About

GeoRef

The database, produced by the American Geological institute, contains over 2.2 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports and theses.

JHU

Info About

IEEE Xplore (IEEE/IEE Electronic Library)

IEEE Xplore is from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. It contains full text of all IEEE journals, proceedings, and standards from 1988 - present, plus a significant number of the journals are full text back to the 1950s.

In addition to electrical and computer engineering it covers biomedical and control engineering and topics like remote sensing, imaging, acoustics, nanotechnolgoy, and more.

JHU

Info About

Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD)

ICSD contains records of all inorganic crystal structures, with atomic coordinates, published since 1913.  Plus you can display the crystal structures.

JHU

Info About

INSPEC

INSPEC covers electrical, computer, control, biomedical engineering and information technology and physics. It begins coverage in 1968.

JHU

LexisNexis Environmental

LexisNexis Environmental is divided into five parts:

  1. Environmental Abstracts which contains scientific papers and reports
  2. News, Journals, and Commentary, which is mostly legal environmental news
  3. Codes and Regulations, which contains federal and state codes and regulations
  4. Case Law and Agency Actions, which contains federal and state laws and agency actions
  5. Waste and Materials, which contains federal and state waste site data and hazardous materials information

Info About

MathSciNet (Mathematical Reviews)

MathSciNet covers the world's literature in mathematics and its applications, including engineering, statistics, operations research, and computer science.

JHUMilitary & Government CollectionNew Resource

Military & Government Collection provides full text for nearly 400 journals and periodicals including defense Studies, Global Security Review, Joint Force Quarterly, Military Technology, Defense, Combat Edge,  Naval Forces, and more.

Optics Infobase

From the Optical Society of America (OSA) search across all the electronic journals published by OSA.

JHU

Info About

NTIS (National Technical Information Service)

NTIS contains abstracts of scientific and technical reports of the research performed by Federal Agencies and their contractors. Most of the agencies, including DOD, DOE, NIH, DOT deposit reports with NTIS.

Science Citation Index (choose ISI Web of Science)

Science Citation Index or Web of Science provides a way to track who cited whom from 1945 to present.  Contains only journal citations no conference proceedings.

SciFinder Scholar (the easiest way to access Chemical Abstracts, 1947 - current)

* For JHU machines not in the Eisenhower Library, install the SciFinder Scholar client software on your JHU or JHMI computer and access it from your desktop.

SciFinder is the world's largest and most current source of chemical information. It contains all types of inorganic and organic substances alloys, biosequences, coordination compounds, minerals, mixtures, polymers, and salts.

It contains journals, patents, patent families, technical reports, books, conference proceedings, and dissertations from all areas of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and related sciences from 1947 to the present.

SPIE Digital Library

SPIE Journals cover the broad field of optical science and engineering as well as the key disciplines of electronic imaging, biomedical optics, and microelectronics. The SPIE Digital Library also contains proceedings from 1998 to the present, starting with SPIE Volume 3245.

Indexes

Indexes are the print equivalent of databases.  You would use the print index when the years you are doing research on fall prior to the database's scope of coverage.

You might also use a print index if the topic you are interested in is farily narrow or somewhat esoteric and is not covered by one of the major indexes in the field.

The indexes below are only a partial list of the indexes available to researchers at JHU.  Please see your departmental librarian if you have questions or need suggestions for other indexes.
