Answers to Some Common Questions

  • What happens if the book I want is checked out?
Use the blue REQUEST button within the full catalog record to recall the book.  The person who has the book will be notified and asked to return the book within 10 days. Once the book is back in the library you will be notified that the book is available for your use.

  • The catalog says the book is available but I can't find it on the shelf.
First, make sure you are looking for the book in the proper "collection." In the HOLDINGS section of the catalog record note if it says Eisenhower stacks, Eisenhower Science Reference, Computer Collection etc.  Then make sure you are in that section of the library. Also check the call number.  Does it say Quarto? Make sure you are searching in the quarto section of each call number.

Second, check the "Staging Area" of the floor you are on to see if the book is waiting to be re-shelved.

Third, is the book new - just published in this year? Check the new book shelves.

Finally, if you're still not having any luck, ask a librarian for help.

  • The electronic journal I want is asking for a user name and password, what do I do?
Unfortunately many things can and do go wrong with electronic journals. Report all problems to a librarian so we can work on getting the problem fixed.

  • How long does it take to get a book on Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
It really depends on the avaialability of the book, but generally 5-10 working days.

  • Does it cost me anything to use ILL?
No, ILL is free to all JHU students, faculty, and staff.

  • What can I check out?
You can check out almost everything in the library - books, DVDs, CD-ROMs, computer manuals, and most other items. However, we do not allow journals and bound journal volumes to be checked out. More on circulation policies.

  • I just want full text articles how do I find them?
First, it's important to make sure you are looking for the BEST information to answer your research question, not just the resources that are easiest to locate.  Doing good research takes time and some patience.

Second, make an appointment with your departmental librarian to lean how to use the electronic resources more effectively.

Have a question that's not answered here check out the Information for Undergraduates page or send me an email.
