 | According to the definition from the American Association of Engineering Societies, "Standards provide technical definitions and guidelines for designers and manufacturers." |
| | Standards are generally issued by organizations that are in some way affiliated with some aspect of the work the document is trying to standardize. For example IEEE issues standards in the electrical engineering and electronics field such as "Standard test specifications for gas-tube surge-protective devices." To find IEEE standards, use IEEE Xplore where the full text of standards is available to you. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), one of the largest issuers of standards in the world, produces standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Their standards include ASTM F116 Specifications for Medical Screwdriver Bits, ASTM E422 Test Method for Measuring Heat Flux Using a Water-Cooled Calorimeter, or A231 Specification for Chromium-Vanadium Alloy Steel Spring Wire. ASTM Standards are available in the library in the Science Reference Collection TA401.A525 Other organizations in addition to IEEE and ASTM issue standards, for example ASCE, ASME, IEE, ANSI, and many more. The library generally does not collect large numbers of standards. The ones we do collect can be found in the JHU Libraries catalog. |
| | | Start with volume 0.0 and look for your standard by title or standard number. Once you find your standard note which volume and number contain the standard. ASTM standards are grouped by broad subject areas in each volume then numerically by standard number within the volume. |

| | Different databases index their data in different ways. For example, in Compendex you can limit your search to standards by searching for "standard" as an EI Control term. In IEEE Xplore you can search their eitire database of standards. You can also go to the Web site of the organization that produced the standard and see if they have a catalog of their standards. One of the largest databases of standards is IHS, an engineering information supply company. Use their database to search for standards and try InterLibrary Services before buying a standard. If there is a standard that you think is necessary for the library to own contact your departmental librarian. |
| | Finding standards, like conference proceedings can sometimes try your good humor. - Unless you have the ISSN or ISBN of the standard do an ADVANCED KEYWORD search in the JHU Libraries catalog.
- Put in as much information as you can as general as you can. Include the word "standard" as a subject keyword.
- If you are sure a term is in the title of the the standard use the title field and try limiting by the date.
- Try searching by the standard number.
- Still can't find it? Contact your departmental librarian.
