The Science Reference section (on C Level) has phase diagrams, semiconductor handbooks, and other sources of physical and property data. In addition to our reference section and the resources listed below, books on the properties of specific materials can be found in the JHU Libraries catalog. Choose ADVANCED KEYWORD and do a SUBJECT search; for example, titanium alloys. ChemNetBase -- Compounds can be searched by name, boiling and melting points, refractive index, toxicity, and many other properties. It includes
EngNetBase -- This is a set of 475 full-text engineering handbooks that are all searched at once. Engineering areas include civil, biomedical, electrical, computer, nanotechnology, optical, machine design, and more.
MatWeb -- Search for material type, properties, composition, and other features. Materials include thermoplastic and thermoset polymers such as ABS, acetal, nylon, and polystyrene; metals such as aluminum, cobalt, copper, lead, and superalloys; ceramics; and wood, fibers, and other engineering materials. NIST Data Gateway -- The NIST Data Gateway is the easiest way to access the incredible amount of information on the NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) site. NIST Physical Reference Data -- Includes physical constants, atomic and molecular spectroscopy data, condensed matter physics data, and more -- PubChem includes substance information, compound structures, and bioactivity data in its three databases (PCSubstance, PCCompound, and PCBioAssay). PubChem is integrated with Entrez and also provides compound neighboring, sub/superstructure, similarity structure, bioactivity data, and other data. PubChem -- PubChem includes substance information, compound structures, and bioactivity data in its three databases (PCSubstance, PCCompound, and PCBioAssay). PubChem is integrated with Entrez and also provides compound neighboring, sub/superstructure, similarity structure, bioactivity data, and other data.
Condensed Chemical Dictionary. 12th edition. Revised by G. G. Hawley. New York: Van Nostrand, 1993. Elsevier's Dictionary of Chemistry: Including Terms from Biochemistry in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and German. A.F. Dorian, compiler. New York: Elsevier, 1983. GABCOM & GABMET: Acronyms of Compounds and Methods in Chemistry & Physics. R. Bohrer, et al., Berlin: Springer-Verlag, 1993. Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary, 12th ed. New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1993. Access Science -- The online version of McGraw-Hill's Encyclopedia of Science & Technology. A general science encyclopedia that is continually updated. In addition to encyclopedia articles it includes definitions, study guides, and more. From the home page, you can choose "Chemistry" or "Physics" and then choose narrower topics within, or you can type your specific keywords into the search box.
McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (1992) - This 20-volume set covers all areas of science including the chemical sciences. Each article includes a brief bibliography. Yearly updates are also provided. The web-based version is available as Access Science. Ullman's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry (5th ed., 1985-1996) -- In its "A" series, this multi-volume set has alphabetically arranged articles on chemicals, processes, and more. In the "B" series are basic principles, such as fluid dynamics and chemical reaction engineering.
CRC Composite Index, Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press, 1991. A three-volume set with a substance index to all the of CRC Press Handbooks. Especially useful if you are not sure where to look for data on a compound. Landolt Bornstein - One of the most extensive sources of physical properties and related data available. It is a systematic, comprehensive, high-quality collection of critically assessed data from all fields of physics, physical chemistry, geophysics, astronomy, materials technology, and engineering. Lange's Handbook of Chemistry, 14th ed. John A. Dean, New York: McGraw-Hill, 1992. Contains tables covering all areas of chemistry including basic property for compounds of all types. The Merck Index, Rahway, NJ: Merck, 1996. Descriptive information on more than 10,000 chemicals, drugs, and biologicals arranged alphabetically by generic or nonproprietary name. Includes property data and references to the original literature. Metals Handbook (10th ed., 1990) -- Chapters on alloy phase diagrams, failure analysis, corrosion, and more. Units of Conversion and Measurement Conversion of Units (Institute of Chemistry, Freie Universitat Berlin) -- Allows conversion of temperature and currency and has a long list of physical constants. A Dictionary of Units -- Units may be found by category or from an alphabetical list. There is an outline of the SI system and some of its definitions and units, as well as a list of prefixes. There is also a description of the metric system, the U.S. system, and other information. How Many? A Dictionary of Units of Measurement -- Every kind of measurement you can think of, such as the "polypin" (a measure of beer) and degrees of curvature for railroad tracks. NIST Reference on Constants, Units, and Uncertainty -- This NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) site gives information about fundamental physical constants, the International System of Units (SI), and how to express uncertainty in measurement results. Web Sites with Additional Information Astronomy & Astrophysics Reference Data and Databases -- This University of Buffalo Library site lists reference books, accessible databases, software, and more. Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) -- This data center collects and distributes astronomical data and related information. COHOWeb -- Provides data retrieval and analysis of the NASA Space Science Data Center's deep-space heliosphere data HEASARC, High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center -- This NASA site has gamma-ray, X-ray, and extreme ultraviolet observations of cosmic (non-solar) sources. It also provides access to archival data, associated analysis software, and documentation, as well as general astronomical tools (such as "SkyView") to get multi-waveband images of the sky. Do astronomical catalog searches with the HEASARC "Browse" and "Astrobrowse" interfaces. Index to Physical, Chemical, and Other Property Data -- A list of specific properties, such as refraction index, expansion coefficient, bond length, and many more.NOTE: This list refers to the University of Arizona's resources, so you won't have access to some of them. Please ask your librarian for more help if you need it. Infrared Science Archive (IRSA) -- This site provides data sets from NASA's infrared and sub-millimeter astronomy projects and missions.
